Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

As part of our Brain Stimulation Program, VCU Medical Center is pleased to offer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an innovative treatment for patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder. TMS is a non-invasive (does not involve surgery), non-medication treatment that stimulates areas of the brain which are linked to depression. During TMS therapy, highly focused electromagnetic pulses are applied to the scalp using an insulated coil. The magnetic pulses are administered in a rapid sequence and extend to regions of the brain thought to be impaired in depression.

VCU Medical Center offers Neurostar TMS Therapy ®, an FDA- cleared device, for the treatment of major depressive disorder. TMS is a safe and well tolerated treatment for patients who have not benefitted from or tolerated antidepressant medications. Patients remain awake and fully conscious throughout the treatment. Patients are able to resume normal activities such as work and driving without interruption.

Here at VCU Medical Center our TMS Clinic uses a team approach. Treatment plans are individualized to the needs of each patient by board certified psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners in the best practices of TMS therapy. We believe this collaborative team approach maximizes and optimizes patient outcomes.
