Men's Infertility
For couples who are having difficulty getting pregnant, the burden is often put on women. Men should also be part the discussion – and the solution.
Male infertility may result from the absence of sperm, a low sperm count, poor movement of the sperm (motility). Physical injury, infection or other damage to the reproductive system may block the sperm. In rare cases, infertility in men is due to a genetic disease such as cystic fibrosis.
About one-third of infertility cases are caused by factors affecting the man, and one-third caused by factors that affect the woman. For the remaining one-third, the cause may be a combination of problems in both partners, or it may be unknown. For many couples, not knowing is the hardest part.
Men’s infertility treatments
The advances in reproductive medicine in the past 30 years have brought new hope to couples who are struggling to get pregnant. Our fellowship-trained physicians and specialists stay on top of the latest changes and improvements in the field.
Depending on the causes of infertility, a range of treatments may be used to help infertile couples.
- Surgery: Vasectomy reversal or varicocele (varicose veins in the scrotum) correction
- Intrauterine insemination (IUI): often called artificial insemination
- Assisted reproductive technology (ART) or in vitro fertilization (IVF)
What to expect when starting infertility treatment
If you are having trouble conceiving a child, there is a good chance we can help. With therapy, most men can become a father for the first time, or once again.
We help you figure out where you and your partner stand. While women are often the focus of family planning, and we do offer comprehensive care to address their needs, we address the concerns of men in the same, modern reproductive center.
Visits with us are always relaxed, with an easygoing atmosphere and friendly staff. On your initial appointment, we require a semen sample, which allows us to evaluate your ability to conceive a child.
We also collect your medical history, listen to your story and understand your concerns and life goals. We perform a physical and sometimes a genetic and hormone evaluation. Our specialists are fellowship-trained in male infertility and reproductive medicine and tailor treatments to you and your specific needs. The plan could require simple lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, a common medical approach or advanced surgical interventions – many of which are minimally invasive.
