Dana has been a librarian for more than 19 years. She managed the consumer health collection at her first job at a public library, which sparked her interest in consumer health librarianship. Dana earned her bachelor's from the College of William and Mary and a master's degree in information science from the University of Tennessee. She went on to receive an additional degree as a specialist in library and information science for medical and consumer health information from the University of South Carolina.

Dana earned a doctorate in social and behavioral science from VCU’s School of Medicine. Her dissertation focused on the health information needs of patients diagnosed with rare cancers and where patients prefer to find health information. She co-authored “The Medical Library Association Guide to Finding Out About Diabetes: The Best Print and Electronic Resources,” which was published in 2013 by Neal-Schuman Publishers.
