About Massey's MU-NCORP
In striving to serve all Virginians, VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center is expanding its clinical trial offerings statewide to provide cancer patients, particularly minority and underserved patients, access to prevention, early detection and treatment clinical trials as well as cancer care delivery research closer to home. Today, Massey partners with 10 health systems and oncology medical practices throughout the commonwealth. Massey assists these practices with development and ongoing management of a quality clinical trials program and provides access to innovative cancer trials through membership to all four adult National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) groups, Children’s Oncology Group, and two NCORP Research Bases.
As an awardee of a MU-NCORP (formerly referred to as Minority Community Clinical Oncology Program) for more than 30 years, Massey plays a significant role in facilitating the development of community-based oncology clinical trial partnerships. Massey’s MU-NCORP team provides ongoing training and education to investigators and staff at component sites and supports their participation on NCTN and MU-NCORP trials. Massey is one of only 14 MU-NCORPs in the country.

Carilion Women's cancer treatment program, in collaboration with Blue Ridge Cancer Care, offers a full range of innovative gynecological cancer treatments to ensure the best possible outcomes and quality of life. Carilion Clinic is a not-for-profit academic referral center located in Roanoke, VA, that fulfills its greater mission to improve the health of the communities it serves by offering committed and compassionate care to the patients of Virginia and West Virginia.
Using a multidisciplinary approach, every patient benefits from the collaborative expertise of an experienced team of specialists, including gynecological oncologists, who meet regularly to discuss each patient's care and progress. In addition to chemotherapy and radiation, Carilion Clinic’s Gynecological Oncology program offers a diversified portfolio of clinical research opportunities providing patients with access to the most cutting-edge cancer therapies and treatments available. Carilion joined Massey's MU-NCORP in October 2021, enabling patient access to NCI clinical trials.

Centra Lynchburg Hematology-Oncology Clinic Inc. is a medical oncology practice. Offices are located in the Centra Health owned Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center in Lynchburg which was designed to offer a comprehensive array of cancer services under one roof. The clinic’s physicians offer medical oncology services to patients utilizing the regional center. Additionally, they provide medical supervision for the Centra clinical research trials program that operates within the center. This program gives members of the community access to clinical trials and allows patients the opportunity to participate in cancer research studies without leaving the area. Centra Lynchburg Hematology-Oncology Clinic Inc. joined the Massey MU-NCORP in 2009, enabling patients access to NCI cancer clinical trials.

Peninsula Cancer Institute is a full-service cancer treatment network dedicated to healing and specializing in compassionate state-of-the-art cancer treatment. The network includes multiple locations in southeastern Virginia, Newport News, Williamsburg, Gloucester, Chesapeake and Onancock. Their team of experts is composed of physicians who are Board Certified in Hematology, Medical Oncology, and Palliative Medicine, Oncology Certified Registered Nurses, a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, a Clinical Research team, ASCP Laboratory Technicians, knowledgeable Financial Counselors, Certified Medical Assistants, and friendly, professional front desk staff who all work together to provide patients and their families the best care possible. Peninsula Cancer Institute joined the Massey MU-NCORP in December 2019, enabling NCI cancer clinical trials to their patients.

Shenandoah Oncology, located in Winchester, VA, has been caring for patients in the surrounding areas of Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland since 1979. Their practice consists of board-certified physicians in specialties including oncology and hematology and oncology-certified nurse practitioners. All of their physicians are registered investigators with the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Their research program provides access to phase 2 and 3 clinical trials for both solid tumor and hematology diagnoses ensuring the most up-to-date care in the community setting. They have a dedicated research staff which includes both a study and data coordinator with nearly 10 years of combined experience in research. Shenandoah Oncology joined the Massey MU-NCORP in 2012, enabling patient access to NCI cancer clinical trials.

VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) is a community-owned nonprofit hospital in South Hill that serves the south-central region of Virginia and portions of northern North Carolina. VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center is partnered with VCU CMH to provide their medical oncology and radiation oncology care and support their clinical research program. Massey medical oncology services began at VCU CMH in July 2012, and Massey radiation oncology services began there in July 2013. As part of the MU-NCORP, CMH offers NCI cancer clinical trials to their patients.

Established in 1981, Virginia Cancer Institute (VCI) is dedicated to the treatment of cancer and blood disorders in Central Virginia. They offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic, therapeutic and treatment services, in six convenient locations. The VCI team includes 23 physicians and 6 nurse practitioners to meet their patients’ needs. More recently, VCI expanded its services to include a surgical division called, Virginia Surgical Institute (VSI). VSI is comprised of 7 surgeons and 1 physician assistant and offers comprehensive surgical care to patients within the Central Virginia area. The research department at VCI allows them to offer patients state of the art treatment on clinical trials that cover multiple disease sites. VCI joined the Massey MU-NCORP in 2013, enabling patients access to NCI cancer clinical trials.
