Plants as medicine, postpartum depression and obesity among sessions for VCU Health’s Lewis Ginter series this May

VCU Health will continue its series of educational seminars on current health care topics this May. The following seminars are from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s Kelly Education Center, 1800 Lakeside Ave. All seminars are free and open to the public, but registration is recommended. Plants, some growing in Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, have been used in a variety of ways throughout history for medicinal purposes. Join Alicia Zukas, M.D., a neurooncologist at VCU Massey Cancer Center, as she tells the story of how plants are used every day to combat various diseases from cancer to dementia.

How Obesity Affects Your Health

People who are overweight or obese are more susceptible to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, acid reflux and gynecological disease. Guilherme Campos, M.D., professor of surgery and chair, VCU Health Division of Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery, will discuss the causes and available treatment options for obesity, as well as ways to maintain a healthy weight.

Postpartum Depression: Breaking the Silence

Postpartum depression is the primary complication in pregnancy and childbirth. One in seven women will experience depression and/or anxiety during their pregnancy or after childbirth. Join Christine Isaacs, M.D.; Fidelma Rigby, M.D.; Bushra M. Shah, MBBS; and clinical social worker Janet K. Abraham to learn more about postpartum depression, including how to identify risk factors and symptoms. There will also be information on VCU Health programming to support new moms and their mental health journey.
