RICHMOND, Va. (May 11, 2022) —

VCU Medical Center today was recognized as part of Newsweek’s list of Best Maternity Hospitals for 2022.

Only 350 hospitals nationwide made the magazine’s annual list of Best Maternity Hospitals, which recognizes hospitals that excel in providing high-quality care to mothers and newborns.

“This is exciting news. We’ve worked hard to create a culture where patients are empowered to have the birth experiences they want, within the highest standards of medical care and safety,” said Christine Isaacs, M.D., interim chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at VCU Health. “We are proud that our data reflects these constant efforts and our ongoing teamwork. I am delighted to recognize our amazing people and the work that we do at VCU Medical Center.”

Newsweek and Statista, a global data research firm, collaborated to evaluate hospitals based on important quality and safety metrics. Hospitals were assessed based on a national survey of 10,000 medical professionals in the field; key metrics, such as rates of early elective delivery, cesarean delivery and episiotomies, as well as compliance with safety measures such as newborn bilirubin screening and blood clot prevention techniques for mothers delivering via C-section; and patient survey results.

This announcement follows U.S. News and World Report recognizing VCU Medical Center as one of the Best Hospitals for Maternity in December of 2021. VCU Health continues to prioritize patient care and experience, allowing patients to see providers, including midwives, at multiple, convenient central Virginia locations including downtown Richmond, Stony Point and Short Pump. VCU Health at GreenGate, the health care system’s newest location in Short Pump, opened this month and offers a full range of women’s health services.
