Brain Injury and Concussion Medicine

We provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient brain injury rehabilitation and care at VCU Health, Sheltering Arms Institute and the Central Virginia VA Health Care System (CVHCS). We strive to maximize the quality of life for persons with brain injury through the use of rehabilitation services. Our programs emphasize the enhancement of quality of life by improving functional independence, increasing participation in social activities, preventing further injury and providing education in health maintenance.

The Brain Injury Programs at VCU Health, Sheltering Arms Institute and CVHCS provide care in self-contained units serving both adult and adolescent patients with traumatic brain injuries stemming from accidents such as falls, gunshot wounds, assaults or car accidents.

Our highly specialized staff also treats those with non-traumatic injuries from causes such as aneurysms, hemorrhages or brain tumors. In collaboration with Sheltering Arms Institute and CVHCS, we are proud to be one of only 16 federally designated Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Model Systems Centers in the U.S. and one of only four centers in the nation to have a dual designation as a spinal cord injury (SCI) and TBI model systems center.
