Advancing medical care to fight sickle cell

Our team includes hematologists (physicians specially trained to treat blood disorders), internists, nurses, social workers, behavioral health counseling and others. Our providers – among the best-known in the country – have deep experience in patient care and pain management. Because sickle cell disease creates long-term risks of organ failure, bone disease and other complications, we can coordinate your care with other specialists.

We also are at the forefront in developing and testing new therapies and drugs to treat sickle cell and its symptoms. In fact, Dr. Wally R. Smith, our program’s medical director, conducted pioneering research that refined the clinical models for managing pain with sickle cell disease. We also participate in other national clinical trials that give you access to potential breakthroughs for managing your disease. And we are working to find cures for all types of sickle cell.
