Substance Use Disorder Treatment (OB MOTIVATE Clinic)

With compassion and respect, we offer women treatment and support for substance use disorders

Did you know that less than 1 in 10 people with substance use disorder are getting treatment? The path to recovery can be challenging, but treatment can help. Whether you want to address a substance use disorder as you prepare for pregnancy, discuss treatment options after you deliver or are looking for treatment especially for women, our OB MOTIVATE clinicians are here to help you.

OB MOTIVATE at VCU Health, created in 2019, is the only program in central Virginia that provides an interdisciplinary, integrated approach to women with substance use disorders. We treat women across their life course - including during and after pregnancy. Our providers work with you to create and maintain a tailored treatment plan. One that supports your goals. Our program provides evidence-based, compassionate, person-centered care. We offer:

  • OB-GYN care
  • Addiction treatment and recovery services
  • Both OB-GYN and addiction care

Meet Our Team

Our team is led by Dr. Caitlin E. Martin, Dr. Katherine Tyson and Marjorie Scheikl, perinatal addiction program nurse coordinator.

Dr. Martin and Dr. Tyson are two of only a few providers offering integrated OB/GYN and addiction medical services in Virginia. They help women manage substance use disorders anytime across their lifespan, including before, during and after pregnancy.

"Patients come to see me because they are looking for someone to help them with their needs, whether it be gynecologic or addiction related,” Martin says. “My new patients can expect to meet someone who will speak to them and treat them with compassion and respect."

…the staff at VCU are more educated and more compassionate towards the issue of addiction, especially in pregnancy and motherhood. So I haven't dealt with anything here compared to what I've seen and experienced at other places…. I'm very grateful for that.

Patient Resources

What is addiction and a substance use disorder? Addiction is a chronic brain disease that is treatable. Substance use disorders are one type of addiction. Addiction involves genetics, brain pathways and your environment. Continued use of a drug or alcohol leads to changes in your brain that make it hard to stop taking the substance, even if you want to (ASAM, 2016). Like high blood pressure or diabetes, addiction is a long-lasting illness that you can manage with the help of others. People with substance use disorders can recover.
